MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University was recently named a recipient of the 2014 Division II Award of Excellence. The NCAA announced 26 conference and independent winners of the award recognizing events and activities that exemplify the type of community engagement the division emphasizes.
The 26 conference and independent winners of the 2014 Division II Award of Excellence are each awarded $500 for the event or activity in which they were recognized. In addition, for the first time in the award’s existence, a single conference produced two award recipients with Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan working together toward granting the wish of Upper Peninsula Make-A-Wish child Madison.
Together the student-athletes are raising money to sponsor Madison’s Wish of going to Disney to participate in their princess program. Madison is a six year old from Hancock, Mich., that has been diagnosed with Nemaline Rod Myopathy, a rare genetic muscular disorder. She loves butterflies, Fresh Beat Band, being outdoors, and playing on her iPad. The student-athletes are hoping to raise $6,000 together to make Madison’s dreams come true.
NMU student-athletes have currently raised over $1300 through their fundraising efforts this fall. They have been selling t-shirts and collecting donations at athletic events throughout this semester.
NMU student-athletes have set up a donation website where you can make your contribution. Donations can be made at http://friends.wish.org/022-000/page/Kristen-Rogers/Northern-Michigan-University-SAAC---Madison's-Wish.htm to make Madison’s Wish come true.
