MARQUETTE – NMU Rec Sports and the YMCA of Marquette County are partnering with local schools and municipalities to host free swimming and water safety lessons for every third grade student in Marquette County.
Dubbed “Superior Splash”, the event will be held at four different locations April 21, 22, and 23, 2014. Each day the students will learn new skills and techniques to be safe in and around the water. Students will participate in demonstrations with professional rescue personnel and learn basic swimming strokes. The goal is to not only teach the students how to avoid water danger, but also what do to if they find themselves in trouble in the water.
“Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children and it’s entirely preventable,” said Matthew Williams, Aquatic Director with the YMCA. “With the water that surrounds us in the U.P., every child needs to be a swimmer.”
Activities will include: the UP’s largest swimming lesson, proper lifejacket use, small craft safety, ways to rescue a distressed swimmer and information on local beachfront safety. Local rescue personnel from the Marquette Fire Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Coast Guard will demonstrate rescue techniques and equipment. NICE and Marquette Area Public Schools are also participating as partners in the event.
“This is a great opportunity for students to participate in not only the largest swimming lesson in the Upper Peninsula, but also a chance to have exposure to information that could potentially save lives,” said Katie Theut, Fitness & Informal Recreation Manager with NMU Rec Sports. “We want every child to be a safe in and around the water and this is a great way to start the process, especially with the summer beach season on the way.”
