Week Ahead: Wildcat Nordic Skiing Hosts Elite Event, Lacrosse Plays First Game

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Nordic skiing teams welcome an elite field to the Al Quaal Recreation Area for the National Ski Hall of Fame SuperTour, and the lacrosse team plays its first game in program history at the Superior Dome, during a busy week for Northern Michigan athletics.

To give parents a kids-free Valentine's Day, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will host a Lock-In at Vandament Arena from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Children will have the chance to spend time with their favorite Wildcats. Food will be provided, and activities are planned for the entire night. The cost is $15 per child, and all proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The SuperTour, set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, will be the first national Nordic skiing race to take place in Marquette County. Acclaimed programs, including the Sun Valley SEF Gold Team, Stratton Mountain School T2 Team, Craftsbury Green Racing and Alaska Pacific University, will be in attendance.

On Saturday and Sunday, the SuperTour will double as the NCAA Central Region Championships, giving the Wildcats the chance to capture more team hardware and secure their place in the NCAA National Championships. Northern Michigan skiers are only set to race during regional competition.

On Saturday, the lacrosse squad will kick off its inaugural season by squaring off against Northland, a fellow first-year program. It will also become the final Wildcat team to debut during the 2016-17 campaign.
