Football Has Four on GLIAC First Team

BAY CITY, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University football team had four players honored by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the annual postseason awards. Seniors Zach Anderson, Rockne Belmonte and Jace Daniels along with junior Christian Jessie were named to the All-GLIAC First Team.

Daniels, a native of Escanaba, Mich., anchored the NMU offensive line. He appeared in all 11 games this season and was named to the GLIAC Second Team last season.

Anderson (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) had 71 total tackles with 40 solo tackles and 31 assisted tackles. He had 10 tackles-for-loss, one sack and an interception. Anderson was named to the second team in 2010 and 2011.

Belmonte, a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., handled the punting and kicking duties for the 'Cats. He finished his career with 45 field goals to break NMU's career mark, including an NMU and Superior Dome record 58-yarder against Grand Valley. Belmonte broke the NMU record for field goals in a season (15) in 2011 and was 14-for-20 in 2012, making all 25 PAT attempts.

Jessie (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was selected on special teams as he led the GLIAC in kick return average, posting 28.6 yards per return. He broke a Superior Dome record with a 99-yard kickoff return in the final game of the season against Ferris State. Jessie finished the season with a team-leading 501 receiving yards on 33 catches. He also led the team with eight touchdowns on six receiving, one rushing and the kick return.

Six Wildcats were named Honorable Mention as senior linebacker Eddie Knoblock and juniors offensive lineman Pat Fehlberg, running back Casey Cotta, quarterback Cody Scepaniak and linebacker Morgan Stenz along with sophomore linebacker Nick Krause were honored.
