Football Wraps Up Season at Ferris State

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University football team closes out the 2013 season on Saturday (Nov. 16) at noon with a game on the road at Ferris State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup. In the all-time series, the Bulldogs lead, 18-15-6 in 39 meetings dating back to 1946. In 2012, FSU beat NMU, 32-21, in Marquette. The last game played in Big Rapids was in 2011 when the Wildcats were defeated 35-6.

The Wildcats are 3-6 overall and in GLIAC play entering their final game. Last week (Nov. 9), NMU was defeated, 52-17, by No. 17 Saginaw Valley State. NMU is averaging 23.7 points per game while allowing 34.1 points per game by opponents. Northern has yet to win a game on the road in 2013, with its three wins coming at home against Findlay (Sept. 14), Wayne State (Oct. 26), and Northwood (Nov. 2).

Offensively, NMU is averaging over three touchdowns with 23.7 points scored per game. Freshman quarterback Shaye Brown averages 184.0 passing yards per game. Sophomore running back Wyatt Jurasin has 507 yards on the season, averaging 56.3 yards per game. Redshirt freshman Keon Collier has 271 yards on 89 carries and 30.1 yards per game. Senior Christian Jessie and sophomore Marcus Tucker both average 68 receiving yards a game. Tucker has 45 receptions for four touchdowns and 614 yards while Jessie has 42 receptions for 630 yards and four touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Wildcats average 445.8 yards allowed per game, on 193.1 rushing and 252. 7 passing yards. Senior linebacker Nick Krause leads the Wildcat defense with 68 total tackles on the season, including 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Senior defensive back Brandon Parson leads with four pass break-ups and three interceptions on the year.

Ferris State is currently the second place team in the GLIAC North as they are 7-3 on the season and 7-2 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs are on a three-game win-streak after defeating Michigan Tech (Oct. 26), Wayne State (Nov. 2), and Northwood (Nov. 9).  The Bulldogs three losses of the year came against non-conference foe North Dakota State (Sept. 7), Saginaw Valley State (Oct. 5), and Hillsdale (Oct. 19).

The Bulldogs are led offensively by sophomore quarterback Jason Vander Laan who has 32 of the Bulldogs 53 touchdowns on the year with 14 of those coming passing and 18 coming rushing. He has 126 competitions on 199 attempts with 9 interceptions and averages 158.9 yards passing per game. 

Vander Laan has three go-to receivers in Antonio Agurs, Jake Lampman, and Dontae Ingraham.  They have 31, 30, and 27 receptions, respectively. They account for 35.4, 44.8, and 30.7 yards receiving per game, respectively.  Vander Laan has 1,396 on the ground for the Bulldogs averaging 139.6 rushing yards per game. Jamaal Jackson has tallied 389 yards rushing on the year, good for 38.9 yards per game.
