DULUTH, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped to 0-2 on the season with a defeat at the UM-Duluth Tournament. NMU was defeated by MSU-Mankato 67-59. Mankato improves to 4-0 on the season.
The Wildcats were down by two points at the half (31-29). NMU shot 44 percent from the floor for the first 20 minutes of the game (11-25). Two 'Cats were already in double-digits in the scoring column as Tyler Kazmierkoski led the way with 13 points. Jerard Ajami added 10 points.
The second half saw the 'Cats keep the game close. Within the first two plus minutes of the half the 'Cats had the lead thanks to a three-pointer by Kazmierkoski at 18:29 and a layup by Ryan Reichel at 17:56. Mankato went ahead for good at 14:52. With 8:14 left in the game Darren Jones hit a jumper which cut the lead to 49-46. Jake Suardini hit a three-pointer with 49 ticks left on the clock, but it was not enough (64-56).
Suardini ended up as the high scorer for the 'Cats and the game with 19 points. Kazmierkoski added 16 points while Ajami had 14. Suardini also added seven rebounds. Jadee Jones led Mankato with 18 points.
NMU was 22-53 from the floor for the game (41.5 percent). The 'Cats connected on 8-25 shots from three-point range (32 percent). From the charity stripe the 'Cats were 7-11 for 63.6 percent.
NMU will face the host school, the UM-Duluth Bulldogs, tomorrow night (Nov. 24).
