Wildcats Look to Get Back on Track in GLIAC

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan men's basketball team looks to snap a three game conference losing streak this week, when it travels to divisional foes Saginaw Valley State (Jan. 12) and Lake Superior State (Jan. 14) for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference north division contests.

The 'Cats come into the matchup at 6-7 on the season and 2-4 in the GLIAC. NMU finished off its non-conference schedule on Jan. 9 with a 75-64 win over Northland International University. The win was the 'Cats 14th straight in the series and capped a 4-3 non-conference record for the season. NMU was led by senior guard DeAndre Taylor, who netted 20 points and grabbed nine boards.

NMU is led by freshman guard Haki Stampley and Taylor. The duo have led the 'Cats in scoring in 11 of the 13 games this season, while senior center Jared Benson went on to lead NMU in the other two contests. Stampley is averaging 16.0 points per game and ranks fifth in the GLIAC in scoring. Taylor is averaging 14.0 ppg and leads the team in rebounds with 6.4 boards per game.

The Cardinals enter the contest at 5-7 on the season and 2-4 in the GLIAC. SVSU pulled off a big upset win over Ferris State 79-59 on Jan. 7.

The 'Cats hold a slim lead in the all-time series at 28-26, dating back to the 1975-76 season. The Cardinals have dominated the series recently, taking four of the last five meetings including both a season ago.

The Lakers enter Saturday's game at 7-6 on the season and 2-4 in the GLIAC. The Lakers defeated Grand Valley State their last time on the court 69-57 on Jan. 7.

NMU has historically dominated the all-time series at 61-30, dating back to the 1947-48 season. The Lakers however have won eight straight meetings in the series since 2007.

Thursday's game is part of a doubleheader, with the women's game set to tipoff at 6 p.m. Saturday's matinee game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
