Men’s Basketball Returns Home

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After falling in both of its games over the weekend, the Northern Michigan University men's basketball team returns to the Berry Events Center for a pair of games. The weekend will tipoff against Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday (Jan. 17) at 5:30 p.m. and will conclude against Wayne State University on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 11 a.m.

NMU enters Thursday's matchup at 4-10 overall and 3-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Northern was defeated at Grand Valley State University (43-41) on Thursday (Jan. 10) and at Ferris State (51-41) on Saturday (Jan. 12). Junior forward Matthew Craggs leads the way for the Green and Gold averaging 14.2 points per game, along with six rebounds.

Saginaw Valley is two spots ahead of NMU in the North Division standings in sixth place with a 4-5 conference record. The Cardinals fell to Lake Superior State University (70-60) and Wayne State (90-56) over the weekend. Chris Webb leads the scoring for SVSU averaging 16.8 points per game, while Brett Beland averages 12.6. On the boards, Rob Clark averages 8.3 a game.

Northern edges SVSU 29-27 in all-time meetings between the two schools. Last season, the 'Cats split with the Cardinals, with the Cardinals taking the 67-60 win in University Center and NMU took the 76-74 victory on its home court.

Wayne State sits at the top of the North Division with an undefeated 9-0 record in the conference. WSU is currently on a five-game winning streak after defeating Northwood 74-71 and SVSU over the weekend. Leading the way for the Warriors is Chene Phillips with a 15.8 point average per game and Mike Hollingsworth who averages 15.3 points. Cole Prophet (11.9) and Ian Larkin (10.8) also average double figures. Larkin leads the Warriors in rebounds, with a 6.5 average.

The series record between NMU and Wayne State is an even 33-33. The two teams met a season ago in Marquette with the Warriors coming out on top, 72-55.

100.3 FM "The Point", the official radio voice of the NMU Wildcats, will broadcast both games.
