Good start: The Wildcats have started the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 season where they started 4-0. NMU defeated Lewis University Saturday night as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge 79-78 when sophomore Will Carius (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) hit a running half-court shot at the buzzer. They followed it with an 83-68 victory over University of Wisconsin Parkside.
Carius' hits from deep: Carius hit Saturday's game-winner from half court. Taking the ball out from underneath the Lewis basket, Carius entered the ball to junior Naba Echols (Memphis, Tenn./Mitchell), who dribbled the ball across half court. As a defender came to Echols, he passed to Carius who caught the ball in stride and shot it to the basket, banking in the game-winner. Carius returned Sunday and finished with 17 points, including 8-11 from the free throw line.
Echols big game: Against Parkside, Echols finished with a team-high 27 points. He finished the game shooting 10-14 from the field, including 3-4 from the three-point line. He was also credited with three assists and three rebounds in 32 minutes of play.
Johnson leads the team: Junior Isaiah Johnson (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) paces the Wildcats by averaging 17 points a game and is shooting 13-25, shooting 52%, and is 6-12 from behind the arc. Johnson is tied with sophomore Myles Howard (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) for the team's lead in rebounds, both grabbing 11 on the year.
Double figure average: Four players are averaging double-figures so far this season. In addition to Johnson's 17, Echols is averaging 15.5 points a game. Sophomore Sam Taylor (Chicago, Ill./Thornton) has posted 14.5 points a game and Carius has added 11.5.
Howard's block party: Howard leads the team with five blocked shots. He swatted three in the opener against Lewis and added two against Parkside. He is placed third in the GLIAC entering the weekend.
NMU versus Minnesota State-Moorhead: NMU is 6-4 all-time against the Dragons, but have dropped their last three matchups. Last season's contest was the first game between the two teams since the 2007-08 season.
NMU versus Southwest Minnesota State: The Wildcats enter Sunday's contest looking to narrow the series as the Mustangs hold a 3-1 advantage between the two. NMU has dropped the last three matchups, winning the first-ever contest held in the 1986-87 season.
