Hockey Names Award Winners

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team announced its award winners for the 2012-13 season. The Wildcats annually hand out 12 awards.

Junior goaltender Jared Coreau was named Gary Emmons Most Valuable Player after starting all 38 games. He had a 2.70 goals against average and 91.9 save percentage. He was twice named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Week and had a season-high 50 saves against Lake Superior State on March 1. Coreau also received the Jim Mussatto Memorial Endurance/Fitness Award.

Senior defenseman Scott Macaulay received the Steve Weeks Unsung Hero Award and Dennis Sibilsky Senior Award. The two-time captain played all 38 games, tallying five goals and 11 assists. He was named the CCHA Defenseman of the Week after scoring the game-winner vs. Alaska on Nov. 23.

Junior defenseman CJ Ludwig collected the Dallas Drake Defensive Player of the Year Award and Tom Laidlaw Best Defenseman Award. Ludwig had four goals and 11 assists in 36 games. He was second on the team in blocks (52) and penalty minutes (51) and was named the CCHA Defenseman of the Week on Jan. 21.

Senior forward Matt Thurber was named the Bill Joyce Best Forward Award after leading the CCHA with 26 assists and leading the team in points (32). He was the CCHA Player of the Month for January.

The Don Waddell Best Freshman Award went to forward Darren Nowick and the Ed Ward Most Improved Player Award went to junior forward Erik Higby. Nowick finished with 10 points on seven goals and three assists in 31 games. Higby tallied 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists in 35 games after collecting seven points (2G-5A) in 2011-12.

The Brad Werenka Coaches Academic Award went to senior forward Kory Kaunisto who was NMU's nominee for the CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He holds a 3.98 grade point average in finance, the highest GPA out of the 11 CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees.

The Clara Pantalone Memorial Community Service Award went to sophomore defenseman Jake Baker.

Freshman defenseman Ryan Trenz was the Steve Bozek Plus/Minus Award winner with a +6 on the season. He appeared in 26 games with two assists.
