STOCKHOLM – Former Northern Michigan University hockey player Erik Gustafsson won the 2013 IIHF World Championship as a member of team Sweden on Sunday (May 19). Gustafsson scored the first goal for his team as Sweden defeated Switzerland 5-1 for the first title since 1986.
Gustafsson, a native of Kvissleby, Sweden, played three seasons for the Wildcats from 2007-10. He was an All-American in 2008-09 and tallied seven goals and 93 assists while appearing in 123 career games. Gustafsson played 27 games for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League this season, scoring three goals and adding eight assists.
