MADISON, Wis. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team surrendered a goal with less than five minutes remaining, after tying the game earlier in the period, and fell 2-1 at No. 3-ranked University of Wisconsin on Saturday (Oct. 12) night in front of 9,516 fans at the Kohl Center. The Badgers swept the Wildcats in the season-opening non-conference series after a 5-2 win on Friday (Oct. 11).
Junior defenseman Luke Eibler tied the game at one with his first goal as a Wildcat 9:20 into the third. The even strength tally was unassisted.
The game-winner was scored by Grant Besse with 3:55 left in the third. Michael Mersch and Joe Faust assisted on the goal.
Nic Kerdiles gave the home team a 1-0 lead 8:11 into the game with an even strength goal from Joseph LaBate.
Wisconsin (2-0, 0-0 BIG) outshot NMU 29-21. NMU sophomore goaltender Michael Doan got his first career start, stopping 27 Badger shots. Twelve of the saves came in the first period. Joel Rumpel had 20 saves for the home team.
NMU (0-2, 0-0 WCHA) had three minor penalties while Wisconsin had two. Northern was 0-for-2 on the man advantage and UW was 0-for-3.
The Wildcats play their home opener next weekend (Oct. 18-19). NMU hosts Nebraska-Omaha at 7:07 p.m. on Friday and Saturday from the Berry Events Center.
Game Notes: Eibler had three goals in two seasons at Northeastern…Doan had five relief appearances last season…NMU was last swept in Madison in Jan. 1995…UW last swept NMU in Nov. 1996.
