Wildcats Blank U.S. NTDP U-18 Team in Exhibition Action

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan hockey team downed the U.S. National Team Development Program U-18 team, 4-0, in its season-opening exhibition game Saturday night at the Berry Events Center.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first period when Brock Maschmeyer struck on a man advantage. Maschmeyer took a pass from Shane Sooth and snapped it past Jake Oettinger.

Northern Michigan didn't waste time building its lead to 2-0 in the second period. At 5:38, Gerard Hanson sprung John Siemer on a breakaway, and Siemer walked in on net and slipped it by Oettinger.

The Wildcats capitalized on another power play at the 15:25 mark in the second when Casey Purpur came up with the puck in front and found the back of the net.

Northern Michigan wrapped up the scoring at 6:41 in the third period when Robbie Payne streaked down the wing and sent a seeing-eye pass to Sami Salminen in front for a tap-in score.

Atte Tolvanen turned aside nine shots in 29:20 of play while Derek Dun made 12 saves in 30:37 of action. 

The Wildcats capitalized on half of their power play opportunities. The U.S. NTDP U-18 team held a 21-15 in shots.

Northern Michigan opens regular season play next weekend against Wisconsin in Madison.
