  • NMU Announces 2017-18 Major Award Winners

    MARQUETTE, Mich.— Northern Michigan University Athletics announced their major award winners Friday afternoon for the 2017-18 year. NMU Nordic Skiing junior Ian Torchia (Rochester, Minnesota) and Women's Swimming & Diving sophomore Rachel Helm (Newcastle upon Tyne, England) were named Male and Female Athletes of the Year; NMU Volleyball head coach Mike Lozier was awarded the Coach of the Year honor; NMU Women's Basketball junior Taylor Hodell (Wausau, Wisconsin) received the Humanitarian of the Year award; while NMU Hockey senior Robbie Payne (Gaylord, Michigan) and Cross Country and Track & Field senior Kameron Burmeister (Menominee, Michigan) earned the Male and Female Gildo Canale Outstanding Senior awards.

    Bloomington, Minn.—A pair of Northern Michigan University Men’s Ice Hockey student-athletes were named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Players of the month for March the league office announced on Friday. Junior forward Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, California) was awarded the offensive honor, while sophomore defenseman Philip Beaulieu (Duluth, Minnesota) was named Defensive Player of the Month.

    MARQUETTE. Mich.-- Northern Michigan University and head hockey coach Grant Potulny have entered into an eight-year employment agreement, according to NMU Director of Athletics Forrest Karr. The agreement is effective immediately and extends through June 30, 2026.

    MARQUETTE, Mich.—No. 16 Northern Michigan University Men’s Ice Hockey (25-15-3, 19-7-2-2 WCHA) saw their season come to a close Saturday night after a 2-0 loss to Michigan Technological University (22-16-5, 12-11-5-2 WCHA) in the all-Upper Peninsula Western Collegiate Hockey Association Playoff Championship game.

    MARQUETTE, Mich.—No. 16 Northern Michigan University Men’s Ice Hockey (25-14-3, 19-7-2-2 WCHA) will close out the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs with a one game championship against rival Michigan Technological University (21-16-5, 12-11-5-2 WCHA). The all-Upper Peninsula WCHA Championship will be held Saturday evening in the Berry Events Center with a puck drop scheduled for 7:07 p.m.

Junior goaltender Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) was named the WCHA Goaltender of the Year, while head coach Grant Potulny was unanimously named league Coach of the Year for the 2017-18 season.

    MARQUETTE, Mich.-No 19 Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (24-14-3, 19-7-2-2 WCHA) will compete for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Championship after defeating No. 17 Bowling Green State University (23-12-6, 17-6-5-2 WCHA) Sunday evening, 3-2, in overtime. It will be the first time the Wildcats have appeared in the conference championships since 2010.

The best-of-three semifinal series will bring the three-seed Bowling Green State University (22-10-6, 17-6-5-2 WCHA) to town Friday and Saturday for a 7 p.m. puck drop. If a third game is needed to decide a winner, that contest will also be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

    MARQUETTE, Mich.-Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (23-13-3, 19-7-2-2 WCHA) advanced to the semifinal round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs with a 5-2 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville (12-23-2, 10-16-2-1 WCHA) Sunday evening in the Berry Events Center. It is the first postseason series victory since the Wildcats the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament.

The loss forces a third game of in the quarterfinal series with the winner advancing to the WCHA Playoff semifinals.

    MARQUETTE, Mich.-Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (22-12-3, 19-7-2-2 WCHA) opened up the quarterfinal round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs with a 7-1 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville (11-12-2, 10-16-2-1 WCHA) Friday evening in the Berry Events Center. The seven goals are the most the Wildcats have scored in a game since January 1, 2012 against the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
  • Playoff Hockey Returns to the Berry Events Center

    MARQUETTE, Mich.-No. 19 Northern Michigan University (21-12-3, 19-7-2-2 WCHA) is set to host the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 season as the two seed. The University of Alabama-Huntsville (11-12-2, 10-16-2-1 WCHA) will make the trip to the Berry Events Center for the best-of-three quarterfinal series as the seven seed in the league tournament. The first two games of the series will take place Friday and Saturday with a 7 p.m. puck drop in the Berry. Sundays game will also be at 7 p.m. in the Berry, if necessary. Tickets for the first-round series are on sale through all NMU Ticket Outlets.

    MARQUETTE, Mich.-No. 16 Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (20-11-3, 18-6-2-2 WCHA) will compete in their final series of the regular season this weekend against rival Michigan Technological University (16-14-5, 11-10-5-2 WCHA). The home-and-home series will begin on Friday with the team squaring off in the Berry Events Center at 7 p.m. The four seniors will be honored prior to Friday night's game in the Berry. The regular season will come to a close after Saturday's matchup in Houghton, Michigan set to begin at 7:07 p.m.

    MARQUETTE, Mich.-No. 20 Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (20-11-3, 18-6-2-2 WCHA) earned a sweep over the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (11-18-2, 9-14-1-1 WCHA) with a 4-1 victory Friday evening in the Berry Events Center. The win extended the Wildcats home-ice win streak to eight games.
