EDINA, Minn.—Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey senior forward Robbie Payne (Gaylord, Michigan) was named the first Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week of the 2017-18 season Monday afternoon.
Payne garnered the award after scoring four goals on seven shots over the weekend, with the Wildcats splitting games Friday and Saturday with Lake Superior State University. The Lakers took the victory in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on Friday, while NMU collected the win Saturday in their home-opener. The Wildcats outscored LSSU 7-6 for the weekend.
Two of Payne's four goals were scored in the power-play, while another was an empty net goal. For the weekend, the senior captain recorded a plus/minus of plus-three while on the ice.
After the opening weekend, Payne finds himself near the top of a number of statistical categories in the WCHA and the NCAA. Payne has the outright WCHA lead in goals and is also tied for the top spot for plus/minus. Nationally, Payne leads the country as one of three players with four goals on the season.
Payne was named WCHA Offensive Player of the week twice a season ago after recording six points (2g-4a) for games played October 6-October 9, 2016 and back-to-back two-goal games February 10 and 11, 2017.
The Wildcats hit the road for a pair of WCHA contests this weekend against Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Both games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
