Klimek Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Month for December

BLOOMINGTON, Minn.—Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (11-9-2, 9-5-2-2 WCHA) senior defenseman Jordan Klimek (Langley, British Columbia) was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Month for the month of December the league office announced on Thursday. Klimek was named Defensive Player of the Week twice in the past four weeks.

Tied for the fifth most points in the WCHA during December, Klimek was the top point scoring defenseman in the league during the month with his eight points. He also topped the conference defenseman with six assists during the eight December contests. With two goals, Klimek tied for second among WCHA defenseman during the month.

A 4-2-2 record during December, Klimek helped the Wildcats jump to second-place in the WCHA standings. On December 15, Klimek had a career night helping NMU to a 6-1 victory over Ferris State University in the Berry Events Center. The alternate captain recorded career-highs with two goals scored and three points in the contest. The two goals were his first two of the season and the second and third of his career.

For the season, Klimek has appeared in all 22 games scoring two goals and recording nine assists for 11 points. The total goals and points are already a career-high, while his 48 shots are also a career-high.

Klimek is the first Wildcat to earn WCHA Player of the Month honors this season, while a total of three player have won five WCHA Player of the Week awards. The last NMU player to earn Player of the Month honors was junior goaltender Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) for February of 2017. Former Wildcat, Dominik Shine, also earned a Player of the Month award last season for January of 2017.

NMU begins 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada where they will take part in the inaugural Ice Vegas Invitational in T-Mobile Arena, home of the National Hockey League's Las Vegas Knights. The Wildcats face-off at 11:30 p.m. (EDT) against Arizona State University Friday in the second semifinal contests of the event. The first semifinal game will pit Michigan Technological University against Boston College.
