BLOOMINGTON, Minn.—Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (13-1-3, 11-5-2-2 WCHA) junior forward Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, California) and junior goaltender Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) were named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week and Goaltender of the Week the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The duo played key roles in guiding the Wildcats to a series sweep over No. 14 Bowling Green State University in the Berry Events Center. NMU defeated the Falcons 5-2 on Friday before a 3-2 overtime victory on Saturday to move above BGSU for sole possession of second-place in the WCHA standings.
Loggins earned his first career weekly honor after netting three power play goals over the weekend, including a pair in Friday's victory. His goal on Saturday came early in the second period, tying the contest at one goal each. His three goals lead the all WCHA players over the weekend, while the three points were tied for second.
For the season, Loggins has appeared in all 26 contests totaling 11 goals and 14 assists. His 25 points are tied with junior forward Adam Rockwood (Coquitlam, British Columbia) for the team lead. The 25 points are also tied for fourth best in the WCHA for the year. With 103 shots, he leads the WCHA and is fourth nationally.
Tolvanen finished the weekend with a pair of wins between the pipes, making 23 saves on Friday and 19 on Saturday. The junior has played in 18 contests this season, earning an 11-5-1 record. In nearly 1,000 minutes, his save percentage sits at .907 and his goals against average is 2.58. It is the sixth weekly honor of Tolvanen's career having earned three defensive and two rookie awards.
With 81 career games played, Tolvanen has appeared in the ninth most games at goaltender in NMU history. His seven shutouts in those appearances is enough for fifth all-time at NMU. Additionally, a current career GAA of 2.57 ranks fifth and save percentage of .919 is tied for third. His 2,214 total saves rank eighth most for a Wildcat goaltender.
Loggins and Tolvanen are the fourth and fifth Wildcats to earn weekly conference honors this season. Senior defenseman Jordan Klimek (Langley, British Columbia) earned defensive player of the week honors twice in December en route to player of the month honors. Senior forward Robbie Payne (Gaylord, Michigan) has earned the offensive award twice, while sophomore goaltender Mathias Israelsson (Ytterby, Sweden) was named goaltender of the week once.
This weekend, the Wildcats will continue their four-game homestand when the welcome Lake Superior State University to the Berry Events Center. The series will take place Friday and Saturday, with both contests scheduled for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
