Wildcat Offense Stays Hot, NMU Extends Win Streak

ANCHORAGE, Alas.—Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (12-10-0, 11-4-0-0 WCHA) recorded their fifth-consecutive victory with a 5-1 win over the University of Alaska Anchorage (2-18-1, 1-13-1-0 WCHA) Friday evening.

  SCORING IN BUNCHES

It was an even game for the first 18 minutes of the contest with neither team finding the back of the net, seven shots for each squad, and each team killed a power play opportunity. The Wildcats began to separate themselves in the final two minutes of the period beginning with sophomore forward Joseph Nardi (Edmonton, Alberta) scoring his fourth goal of the season. He took the puck from the Seawolves before sending it to freshman forward Griffin Loughran (West Seneca, New York). Loughran gave it right back to Nardi for the score earning his fifth assist of the season.

With less than 30 seconds remaining in the period, senior forward Denver Pierce (Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan) made it a two-goal lead after corralling a missed breakaway by senior forward Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, California) and sending it into the back of the net. For Pierce it was his sixth goal of the season while Loggins earned his ninth assist. Junior defenseman Philip Beaulieu (Duluth, Minnesota) also picked up his 15th assist after he sent the puck up to Loggins.

  KLEE'S FIRST COLLEGIATE SCORE

After UAA trimmed the lead NMU lead to a single goal with six minutes to play in the second period, freshman forward Garrett Klee (Morrison, Colorado) recorded his first collegiate goal to push the lead back to a pair. Fellow freshman forward Grant Loven (East Grand Forks, Minnesota) recorded an assist on the play for his second of the season. Sophomore forward Caleb Schroer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin) also added an assist for his sixth of the season.

  INSURANCE GOALS

Just in case the two-goal advantage was not enough, NMU added two more goals in the final period. Nardi netted his second goal of the night in the 11th minute of the period for the Wildcats fourth goal of the night. His fifth of the season was assisted by freshman forward Ty Readman (Edmonton, Alberta) and Loughran who recorded his third multi-point outing in the past four contests.

About two minutes later, senior forward Adam Rockwood (Coquitlam, British Columbia) found his fourth goal of the season. Beaulieu picked up his second assist of the contest and his team-leading 20th point of the season.

  THE STREAK CONTINUES

The victory marks the fifth-consecutive for the Wildcats who have also won nine of their last 12 contests. It remains the longest win streak of the season for NMU and the longest since the Wildcats earned seven straight victories during January of 2018.

  ATTE IN GOAL

Picking up his 12th victory this season, senior goaltender Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) made 12 stops Friday night. He now owns a .919 save percentage and a career-high 2.11 goals against average this season. He remains on-pace to set the Wildcat career goaltender records for games played and saves while he could also reach the top shutouts, save percentage and goals against marks.

  SATURDAY NIGHT

NMU will conclude their four-game Alaska trip on Saturday when they face-off with the Seawolves at 11:07 p.m. (EST) in the Sullivan Center.
