Wildcats Fall to Ranked Mavericks

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Men's Ice Hockey (13-12-0, 12-6-0-0 WCHA) dropped Saturday night's contest, 8-2, to No. 7 Minnesota State University, Mankato (21-6-1, 16-4-0-0 WCHA) in the Berry Events Center

  EARLY DEFICIT

The high-powered Maverick offense wasted little time getting on the board scoring 1:07 into the contest. They would quickly extend their lead to three near the midway point of the period with a pair of goals just 35 seconds apart.

  BEAULIEU SCORES

Not long after the third Minnesota St. goal, junior defenseman Philip Beaulieu (Duluth, Minnesota) scored his fifth goal of the season to move into a tie for the team lead with 22 points on the season. Picking up assists on the goal were junior forwards Darien Craighead (Surrey, British Columbia) and Luke Voltin (Blaine, Minnesota). For Craighead, it was his fifth of the season while Voltin recorded his third assist of the season.

The Mavericks added another goal with less than a minute remaining in the opening period to enter the first intermission up, 4-1, on the scoreboard.

  FRESHMAN FINDS THE BACK OF THE NET

After more than 10 minutes of scoreless action to begin the second period, Minnesota St. added two more goals in the latter half of the period. At 16:21, freshman forward Grant Loven (East Grand Forks, Minnesota) gave the Wildcats their second goal of the game and scored his fourth of the season. Senior defenseman Connor Frantti (Spring Grove, Illinois) earned his first assist of the season on the play with freshman forward Jarrett Lee (Hibbing, Minnesota) earning his second. Loven's score would be the last of the period with the Wildcats trailing, 6-2, at the second intermission. 

  THIRD PERIOD

Minnesota St. added two more goals in the third period to extend their lead to six goals, 8-2. The score would hold the rest of the way with the Mavericks picking up their second win of the weekend. The Wildcats have now played in 14 contests against ranked opponents this season.   

  BETWEEN THE PIPES

Senior goaltender Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) made 14 saves Saturday to bring his career total to 3,143. That number is 291 shy of the NMU career record currently held by Craig Kowalski.Freshman goaltender Nolan Kent (Chestermere, Alberta) saw nine minutes of action to end the first period. It was the second time Kent has appeared for the Wildcats this season.

  NEXT UP

The Wildcats will look to return to their winning ways next weekend when they host No. 9/10 Bowling Green State University in the Berry events Center. The series will take place Friday and Saturday with puck drop set for 7 p.m. both nights. Earlier this season, NMU split a series on the road with the Falcons including a 2-0 shutout in the second game of the series.
