BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Seniors Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekly honors after they helped guide the Northern Michigan University Hockey team to a weekend sweep over Lake Superior State University to keep the Cappo Cup.
Loggins started the weekend by notching two assists in Friday's 4-2 victory over the Lakers. It was his third multi-assist game of the season. He followed it by scoring the first two goals Saturday night along with an assist as NMU defeated Lake State 5-3. The three points Saturday is his best performance of the season with his second goal of the game giving him his 50th career goal.
Tolvanen made his 131st career appearance for the Wildcats and is now just two games away from setting a new school record. He recorded 22 saves Friday night and added 26 saves Saturday to give him 3,345 in his career. Over the weekend, he notched a .906 save percentage and allowed just five goals for a 2.50 goals against average.
This is the eighth and ninth weekly award this year for NMU. It is the first recognition for Loggins this season while Tolvanen received his fourth honor and is tied for the most among netminders in the league.
The Wildcats are currently in third place as they head into the final weekend of the regular season. NMU trails Bowling Green State University by two points for second place and lead LSSU by three points. NMU is five points ahead of fifth place, Bemidji State University. Northern Michigan will conclude their regular season by taking on rival Michigan Technological University. On Friday, the team visits Michigan Tech before returning to the Berry Events Center Saturday for Senior Night.
