  • Wildcats Win NCAA Regional

    HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams wrapped up the NCAA Central Regional on Sunday (Feb. 24) afternoon at Michigan Tech. The men’s team won the regional title by seven points (130-123) over Alaska Fairbanks. The women’s team was edged by the Nanooks (129-124) for second place.

    HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams raced in the classic events at the NCAA Central Regional from Michigan Tech on Saturday (Feb. 23). The men are five points (66-61) behind Alaska Fairbanks in the standings. The women also trail the Nanooks by a slim three-point (65-62) margin.
  • CCSA Announces 2013 All-Conference Awards

    MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams had seven Wildcats selected to the all-Central Collegiate Ski Association teams. On the men’s side, Northern Michigan’s Erik Soderman, George Cartwright and Chris Bowler; St. Scholastica’s Jeremy Hecker and Alaska’s Michael Fehrenbach all picked up all-CCSA first-team spots, while Michigan Tech’s Luke Gesior and a quartet of Nanooks (Lex Treinen, Jonas Loffler, Tyler Kornfield and Max Olex) made up the conference’s second team.

    MARQUETTE, Mich. – Sophomore Kyle Bratrud and junior Jordyn Ross, of the Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams, have been named the Central Collegiate Ski Association skiers of the week. The duo played a vital role in lifting the Wildcats to a clean sweep of the CCSA titles at Mt. Itasca, as NMU claimed the men’s, women’s and overall trophies.

    COLERAINE, Minn. – Entering the final day of competition on Sunday (Feb. 17) at the CCSA Championships, the Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s Nordic skiing teams had a comfortable first place lead. At the conclusion of the day, NMU kept its lead and walked away with the title.

  • Skiers Wrap Up Weekend With Classic Relays

    ISHPEMING, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams wrapped up the classic relay races at the Central Collegiate Ski Association Championship on Sunday (Feb. 3). The Wildcats dominated both races, scoring 78 points each from the Al Quaal Recreation Area. “The weekend went really well,” NMU coach Sten Fjeldheim said. “The conditions were next to perfect. The grooming was excellent today and the course was beautiful. The athletes really liked it.”
  • Wildcats Win Freestyle Sprints

    ISHPEMING, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams hosted the first leg of the Central Collegiate Ski Association Championshipon Saturday (Feb. 2) from the Al Quaal Recreational Center. The Wildcat men and women both won the freestyle sprints. The men scored 73 points on the day to defeat St. Scholastica (65), Michigan Tech (64), Alaska Fairbanks (54), UW-Green Bay (41), Gustavus Adolphus (33) and St. Olaf (27).
  • Soderman Named CCSA Skier of the Week

    MARQUETTE, Mich. – Junior Erik Soderman of the Northern Michigan University Nordic ski team was named Central Collegiate Ski Association’s skier of the week. The 2012 NCAA champion in the freestyle race, Soderman showed his ability in the classic tracks as well, winning the 10-kilometer event at the Saints Invitational by a comfortable 20-second margin on Saturday. The junior came within a whisker of repeating the feat in Sunday’s mass start freestyle, finishing just behind teammate George Cartwright and Saint Scholastica’s Jeremy Hecker in one of the most exciting finishes of the CCSA season to date to earn his second podium spot of the weekend.
  • Bratrud Wraps Up Week at World Junior Championship

    LIBEREC, Czech Republic – Northern Michigan University sophomore Nordic skier Kyle Bratrud skied at the World Junior Championships from Liberec, Czech Republic last week. Closing ceremonies were held on Sunday (Jan. 27). “The Junior World Championship was a great experience for Kyle,” NMU Nordic skiing coach Sten Fjeldheim said. “All the athletes I’ve had have go to the junior worlds have come back with a new perspective on what fast means. They gain a great race and cultural experience. The skiathon was Kyle’s strongest race and he gained a ton of knowledge and experience that will help his career at NMU.” On Wednesday (Jan. 23), Bratrud finished 46th in the 10-kilometer freestyle. He crossed the line in 25:38.4, finishing third on Team USA.

    BIWABIK, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams won the overall team title at the Saints Invitational on Sunday (Jan. 27) after winning both the freestyle races from Giants Ridge. The women scored 74 points while the men totaled 75.

    SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams began competition at the 2013 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships on Wednesday (Jan. 2) with the classic sprint races on the Olympic trails at Soldier Hollow. Soldier Hollow was the cross country and biathlon venue for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

    DULUTH, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams both finished first in the freestyle events at Saturday’s College of St. Scholastica’s Christmas Classic. The women scored 24 points in the freestyle followed by CSS and Michigan Tech with nine points each. The men scored 23 points followed by CSS with 14 and MTU, seven.

    HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams dominated the classic races at their season-opening meet, the Wildcat Open, on Saturday morning from the Michigan Tech Ski Trails. The races were originally scheduled for Al Quaal in Ishpeming but a lack of snow moved competition north. Michigan Tech and Green Bay also competed.
