MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer (4-1-0, 2-0-0 GLIAC) junior midfielder Callum Olpin (Norwich, England) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week the league announced Monday afternoon.
To open GLIAC play on Friday, Olpin netted his first goal of the season and his first game-winning goal of his career against Davenport University. He also added an assist on the first goal of the match by junior defender Edgar Astorga (Chicago, Illinois) to finished the day with three points. He added two more goals on Sunday to help the Wildcats shut out Purdue University Northwest for the first multi-goal contest of his Wildcat career.
For the season, Olpin has three goals and a pair of assists to total 8 points. He now has a career high in all three categories.
Olpin is the first Wildcats to earn a weekly GLIAC award since junior midfielder Nick Metcalfe (Royal Oak, Michigan) did so back on October 18, 2016 when he took home the offensive honor. Earlier that same season, Astorga and Ívar Árnason swept the awards presented on September 27, 2016.
NMU will return to action on Friday for their final non-conference match of the season when they host Viterbo University at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will return to GLIAC play on Sunday when they travel to league newcomer the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday at 1 p.m. (EDT).
