  LAST WEEK

The Wildcats split their two matches this past weekend. On Friday, they hosted Davenport University and tied the game later in the second half, but the Panthers responded with the go-ahead goal minutes later to take a 2-1 victory.

The team then returned Sunday and honored seven seniors prior to hosting Ashland University, who they shutout 2-0 to avenge a 1-0 defeat at Ashland earlier in the season. NMU outshot the Eagles 23-5 in the match.

  PLAYOFF PICTURE

NMU is currently slated with the fifth seed in the GLIAC Tournament and are three points behind Northwood University, who is in the fourth spot. A win at Parkside and a loss by Northwood to Saginaw Valley State University would put the teams in a tie for the fourth seed and a home first round match.

Based on the current standings, for NMU to move up to the fourth seed and a first round home match, the Wildcats would also need Ashland to defeat Davenport. In this scenario, NMU would break the tie at the third tiebreaker as they have a victory over Saginaw Valley, who would move into first place, while Northwood fell in both meetings to the Cardinals.

  GETTING REVENGE ON ASHLAND

Earlier this season, NMU fell at Ashland 1-0. On Sunday, the Wildcats took revenge and defeated the Eagles 2-0 while outshooting the Eagles 23-5. The game was scoreless at the half but the NMU scored in the middle of the second half to take the lead. NMU was fouled on their side of the field and senior Lewis Murray (Edinburgh, Scotland) took the free kick. He sailed the ball into the box over the Ashland defense where juniors Keegan Goetz (Gowen, Mich.) and Arni Eiriksson (Akureyri, Iceland) managed to touch it over to senior Luca Lippert (Langen, Germany) who put it into the net to give NMU a 1-0 lead with just over 21 minutes left to play.

Later in the second half, freshman Ryan Palmbaum (Rocklin, Calif.) brought the ball up the field along the left sideline which attracted the Ashland defense. He then centered the ball to a waiting Goetz in the middle of the box who fired the ball past the AU goalkeeper for his first career goal.

Lippert also scored a goal against Davenport and now has five goals on the season. Junior Julius Reis (Obernburg am Main, Germany) notched his first career assist on the goal.

  FRESHMAN IMPACT

Palmbaum has made an impact during his freshman season as he leads the team with seven goals and five assists for a total of 19 points. In the GLIAC, those totals place him in a tie for third.

Freshman Francisco Espinoza (Buenos Aires, Argentina) has played a key role throughout the season as he is one of just four players who has started all 17 matches this season. He has added two goals and two assists this season to aid the offensive attack as well.

  NMU VERSUS PARKSIDE

The Wildcats go for their first win against the Rangers as they are currently 0-2-1 in their last three meetings after Parkside bested NMU earlier this season. The Rangers enter Thursday's matchup leading the GLIAC at 9-2-2 in GLIAC play and 10-5-2 overall.
