Ryan Palmbaum Named Freshman of the Year as Four Earn All-GLIAC Honors

BAY CITY, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer placed four onto Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-GLIAC Men's Soccer teams with freshman Ryan Palmbaum (Rocklin, Calif.) being named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year.

Palmbaum was a key proponent to this year's squad as the paced the Wildcats with eight goals and six assists for a total of 22 points. The freshman tallied two game-winning goals and made program history with the fastest hat trick in school history and second fastest in NCAA Division II history by scoring three goals in less than four minutes in a victory over Upper Iowa University.  His eight goals are the second most in a single season in program history while his six assists and 55 shots are both single season school records.

Palmbaum was joined on the All-GLIAC Second Team by senior Callum Olpin (Norwich, England) and freshman Francisco Espinoza (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Olpin was named as a midfielder and tallied two goals and three assists this season on a total of 36 shots, putting 20 on goal. He finished the year with .556 shot on goal percentage. This was his second All-GLIAC selection after being named to the First Team last season.

Espinoza joined the team this year and tallied two goals and two assists throughout his rookie season. He scored his first career goal against Upper Iowa when he took a free kick from just inside midfield and put it over the goalkeeper for the goal. He then added a second goal at Northwood University.

Sophomore Kaffie Kurz (Paynesville, Liberia) was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. During the season, Kurz recorded an assist in the team's victory over Northwood.

The three helped NMU set multiple firsts in a season that saw them return to their third-straight GLIAC Tournament. The team picked up their first overtime win with a 3-2 victory over Purdue University Northwest. The squad also picked up their first-ever victories over Northwood and Saginaw Valley State University.

The team's eight wins and seven GLIAC victories are also the most in program history.
