Nordic Skiing Wins Three of Four Races at CSS Qualifier

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. – Northern Michigan University Nordic Skiing took part in the College of St. Scholastica CXC/CCSA Qualifier and came away with first place in three of the four races and placed multiple skiers in the top five each time.

Battling frigid temperatures, the men finished just one point back from Michigan Tech, totaling 64 points or second overall in a team effort. The women flipped the course, finishing first with 83 points and one point ahead of storied-rival MTU.


The women started with a field of 101 racers in the 5K Freestyle on Saturday and had three finish among the top five. Sophomore Nadine Matter (Engelberg, Switzerland) led the Wildcats by taking second in 16:24.7. Close behind was sophomore Katerina Hyncicova (Liberec, Czech Republic) with a time of 16:25.7 to take third.

In fifth with a posted time of 16:31.2 was freshman Malin Boerjesjoe (Umeaa, Sweden). Freshman Molly Miller (Kimberley, British Columbia) took seventh and crossed in 16:46.7.

Freshman Hilde Eide (Beitostoelen, Norway) came in tenth, finishing in 16:50.6. Rounding out the NMU squad Saturday was Savanna Fassio (Park City, Utah), who took 12th in 17:13.1.


In the men's race consisting of 98 finishers, the Wildcats took to top two spots. Junior Kjetil Baanerud (Oslo, Norway) crossed first in 28:04.3 while senior Mathias Aas-Rolid (Redalen, Norway) was second at 28:05.5.

Freshman Tobias Moosmann (Kossen, Australia) was the third Wildcat to finish, posting a time of 29:43.3. Freshman Maurus Grond (Davos Monstein, Switzerland) was 14th overall, 29:53.9 and junior Daniel Streinz (Hersey, Main), 29:55.0.

Junior Xavier Mansfield (Minneapolis, Minn.) rounding out the men's team by taking 21st in 30:18.6.


The women returned Sunday to take the top three spots among a field of 28 in the 15K Classic and placed five in the top 10, led by Eide's first place finish in 51:49.2. Miller was second at 51:49.4 while Boerjesjoe took third at 51:50.6.

Matter captured seventh, 52:24.8, and Hyncicova was eighth, 52:27.7.


Aas-Rolid led the men's team in the 20K Classic by leading the field of 32 skiers with a time of 58:17.0 to take first.

Streinz came across in 59:46.6 for fourth and Moosman was fifth in 59:52.1. Grond was 11th, 1:01.54, and freshman Matt Bourne (Lake Elmo, Minn.) took 13th 1:02:18.9. Mansfield was the final NMU finisher as he took 23rd with a finishing time of 1:07.09.5.


The Wildcats will compete again next weekend in Cable, Wisconsin at the Birkie Start Trailhead for the Michigan Tech CXC Cup/CCSA Qualifier on Saturday and Sunday.
