MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Men's Swimming and Diving team won 11 events on their way to a 166-134 victory over Division I opponent University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
In the team's final dual meet of the season, the 200-yard medley relay team opened the meet by winning in a time of 1:33.96. Junior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary School), junior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica/Saint Jude), junior Esteban Gutierrez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colojio De Buchilleres SEA) and sophomore Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos) made up the winning squad.
Budai would also take home two individual races. He captured the 50-yard freestyle in 21.20 and the 100-yard freestyle in 47.23.
Bundzis also captured two races. In the 100-yard backstroke, he touched in a time of 51.04. He posted a winning time of 1:52.65 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Herrera rounded out the multi-winners with a 57.52 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:06.10 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Junior Janne Roovers (Khobar, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran) joined the day's winners with victory in the 1000-yard freestyle, winning the race with a time of 9:45.59.
Winning the 200-yard freestyle was sophomore Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany/Holty Gymnasium-Celle) by reaching the wall first in 1:43.39.
Rounding out the individual victorys for NMU was junior Ryan Knox-Leonard (South Wales, Australia/Toronto). He claimed the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:10.20.
The team of Reinhold, sophomore Maks Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley), Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, U.K./Bury College) and Budai finished the meet and sealed the meet victory by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in comeback fashion, winning with a time of 3:08.88.
The team will finish their home schedule next Saturday as they honor the team's seniors in their year Intrasquad Meet and Skins in the PEIF Pool.
