Men's 800 Freestyle Relay Wins Third Straight Title and Three Others Win On Day Three

JENISON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Men's Swim and Dive team saw four victories on the third day of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. 

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, German/Holty Gymnasium-Celle), junior Esteban Gutierrez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colojio De Buchilleres SEA), junior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia/Toronto) and junior Grantas Dapkus (Kaunas, Lithuania/Kaunas Saule) highlighted the evening by capturing their third-straight title, winning this year with a time of 6:39.44.  The time also qualified for an NCAA B Cut.

Dapkus opened the men's meet by winning the 500-yard freestyle for his second victory at this year's Championships, posting a winning time of 4:29.80.  Junior Janne Roovers (Khobar, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran) came in second with a B Cut time of 4:33.47.  In fourth, Reinhold completed the race in a time of 4:34.92 and also posted an NCAA B Cut. 

Sophomore Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos) collected his first victory at the Championships by winning the 100-yard backstroke for the second year in a row, this year with a time of 47.55. Junior Renars Bundzis (Riga Latvia/Riga Secondary School), with a time of 48.41, to take third.  The pair both qualified for an NCAA B Cut.  Junior Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, U.K./Bury College), 49.74, and Gutierrez, 50.75, also finished among the top eight.  Sophomore Maks Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley) and senior David Wulffe (Wheaton, Ill./St. Francis) also earned points for the Wildcats.

In the 200-yard butterfly, junior David Miranda (Vinaros, Spain/IES Jose Viloplane) claimed victory by just .24 seconds for his first win at this year's Championships, winning in a time of 1:48.40.  Leonard came in third, touching in 1:49.96. Both also made an NCAA B Cut.  Freshman Luke Delaney (Middleton, Wis.) and freshman Drew Del Papa (Warren, Mich./Oxford Virtual Academy) helped the team by getting points. 

Junior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica/Saint Jude) took third in the 100-yard breaststroke by posting a time of 55.26 for a B Cut.  Junior Benjamin Lindberg (Skelleftea, Sweden/Belderskolan) finished eighth in 57.12.  Junior Nathan Rotundo (Marquette, Mich.) gave the Wildcats points.

The Wildcats are currently in second place and just 7.5 points behind the leader, Grand Valley State University.  NMU concludes the meet Saturday with the final day of the GLIAC Championships.
