Wildcats Set for NCAA Swim & Dive Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Men's and Women's Swim and Dive teams head to Indianapolis, Indiana this week to take on NCAA Division II Championships. The men's team brings eight student-athletes while 10 will represent the women.

WEEKLY NOTES

  FOLLOW ALONG

Starting Wednesday, each day will feature the preliminary races starting at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m., the diving trial will take place with the finals for both swimming and diving starting at 6 p.m.

The meet can be followed on Meet Mobile. However, Links for this year's NCAA Championships have not yet been provided. Once available they will be added to the NMU Swim & Dive Schedule on nmuwildcats.com. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

  DIVING IN

Beginning the competition on Tuesday was the diving preliminaries. Senior Angela Probstfeld (White Lake, Mich.), junior Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.), and freshman Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) each competed on both the one and three meter boards, with the top 16 on each board advancing to the finals.  All three advanced and will now compete in the NCAA Championships. 

  QUALIFIED FOR FOUR

Junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England) leads both teams in how many events she has qualified for. Helm will be swimming the 200-yard Individual Medley, seeded fifth with a time of 2:00.79. She is also in the 100-yard Butterfly, 100-yard Backstroke and the 200-yard Backstroke where she is seeded third at 1:56.21.

  BACKSTROKE LEADERS

Joining Helm in the backstroke events are senior Regan Kilburn (Muscatine, Iowa) and senior Savanna Saunders (Manchester, England). Kilburn will be taking on the 100-yard Backstroke, and Saunders will be swimming the 200-yard Backstroke. On the men's side, senior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia) will be swimming both the 100 as well as the 200-yard Backstroke, where he is seeded fourth with a time of 1:44.23.

  FREESTYLE AND MORE

Junior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary) will be taking on the most events for the men. Budai is scheduled to swim 100-yard Freestyle, 200-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Backstroke. Sophomore Lena Soulas (London, England) will also be swimming the 100- and 200-yard Freestyle.

  SENIOR SEASON

Senior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica) will be swimming the 200-yard Breaststroke. Senior David Miranda (Vinaros, Spain) is scheduled to swim the 200-yard Butterfly. Rounding off the events for the men is senior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia) swimming the 200-yard Individual Medley where he is seeded fifth at 1:47.10, and the 200-yard Backstroke.

  RELAY HELP

The men's team will be competing in the 800-yard Freestyle Relay and the 400-yard Medley Relay. In addition to those swimmers competing individual, freshman Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.), junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany), and senior Benjamin Lindberg (Skelleftea, Sweden) will also attend Nationals to compete in the relays. The women's team will be competing in the 200- and 400-yard Freestyle Relays, and the 200- and 400-yard Medley Relays. Assisting in these events are freshman Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.), sophomore Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.), and junior Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.).
