UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Women's Swim & Dive defeated Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Saginaw Valley State University 189-88 Saturday in a GLIAC dual meet. On Friday, the Wildcats fell to Grand Valley State University 159-141 in another GLIAC dual meet.
| SHE TOUCHED FIRST - A LOT
Freshman Michaela Nelson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) led the Wildcats with five first place finishes in the two days. At GVSU, she won three events. She took first in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.67. She then also captured the 100-yard freestyle in 53.29 and the 100-yard butterfly by touching at 58.68.
She then won two more freestyle events Saturday at SVSU. Timing in at 1:55.79, she took the 200-yard freestyle and followed it with a 53.12 in the 100-yard freestyle.
| WINNING FOUR
Senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England) captured first place in four individual events over the weekend. Against the Lakers, she won both backstroke events. In the 100-yard backstroke, she clocked in at 56.93 and also took the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.49.
On Saturday, she added a victory in the 50-yard freestyle, 24.60, and repeated a victory in the 200 back by touching the wall at 2:02.01.
| TAKING HOME THREE
Freshman Meritxell Font Cantarero (Girona, Spain) was first in three races. At GVSU, she beat the field, 2:08.56, in the 200-yard butterfly. She then won twice over the Cardinals. In the 100-yard butterfly, she clocked in at 58.54 then won the 400-yard individual medley at 4:41.49.
| MORE WINS
Seven others also took first, all at SVSU. Senior Nicola Pasquire (Bedford, England) won the 1000-yard freestyle, 10:47.54 while freshman Maria Arakelian (Livonia, Mich.) took the 500-yard freestyle in 5:14.63.
In diving, sophomore Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 265.45.
| RELAY WINS
NMU dominated the relays as they won both relays in both meets. Against the Lakers Friday night, the team of Helm, Arnold, senior Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.) and freshman Pilar Perello Ferrer (Inca, Spain) started the weekend by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1:47.23.
Nelson, Font Cantero, Perello Ferrer and Helm closed out Saturday's meet by posting a time of 3:34.12 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
On Friday, Helm, Springhetti, Font Cantero, and Nelson won the 400 medley relay, 3:53.57, while Nelson, Irelan, freshman Julianna Engesser (South Elgin, Ill.) and Helm posted a winning time of 1:39.06 to take the 200 free relay.

Saturday's meet was a close one but the Lakers were able to capture a 159-141 victory. The Wildcats bounced back in a big way Saturday as they defeated SVSU 189-88.
