Wildcat Swim & Dive Set to Host Saturday

MARQUETTE, MICH. – The Northern Michigan University Swim & Dive team hosts the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in the PEIF Pool.



The Wildcats visited Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes Grand Valley State University and Saginaw Valley State University last weekend. On Friday, GVSU got the best of the Wildcats as they defeated both the men's and women's teams. NMU rebounded Saturday by defeating the Cardinals. 


Two women are ranked in the top 10 nationally in the 1,650 yard freestyle. Ranked sixth is Maria Arakelian (Livonia, Mich.) with a time of 17:38.65. Close behind in eighth is Nicola Pasquire (Bedford, England) who clocked in at 17:46.10.

Freshman Ondrej Zach (Rudolfov, Czech Republic) is ranked in both the 1,000 yard freestyle and the 1,650 free. He is second in the 1,650 free and is sixth in the 1,000 at 9:29.05.


Senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England) posted a time of 26.72 in the 50-yard backstroke. She leads the country in the 100-yard backstroke at a time of 54.99. She is second in the 200-yard backstroke, 2:00.61.

Freshman Ivan Amillo Escobedo (Valencia, Spain) is fourth in the 100 yard freestyle, 45.08 and eighth in the 1:40.96. Freshman Roberto Camera (Rozzano, Italy) is ranked in two breaststroke events. His time of 26.39 puts him third in the 50-yard breaststroke while his 55.83 has him fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Senior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary) boasts a 49.26 to be in fourth in the 100 back while freshman Erikas Kapocius (Ignalina, Lithuania) is fourth with the time of 4:02.81 in the 400-yard individual medley.


Four Wildcats are ranked in the top ten nationally in the diving events. On the women's side, freshman Amanda Baird (Riverside, Calif.) is ranked second, posting a high of 268.75, and sophomore Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) who is fifth with 251.60 points. On the 3-meter board, Baird is fifth at 241.30 points while Grossman is seventh with 233.75 points. Senior Jaime Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.) is 10th with a best score of 226.05.

Freshman Ryan Leach (Colorado, Springs, Colo.) is 10th on the men's 3 meter dive with 213.60 points.


Both teams have two relays that are ranked. The women's 400 yard freestyle relay has a time of 3:31.58 to finish sixth. Their 400-yard medley relay is fifth with a time of 3:49.14.

The 400 free relay for the men, at 3:02.22, are ranked second while the 400 medley relay, with a posted time of 3:25.25, is ranked 10th.


The Women won 15 events in last year's meet, defeating Stevens Point 212-85. The men captured 13 events and beat the Pointers 175-119.
