Women's Swim & Dive Wins Big Over UWSP

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Northern Michigan University Women's Swim & Dive defeated the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, winning 203-86 Saturday afternoon.

  RELAYS TAKE IT

The Wildcats opened the meet with a win, taking the 200-yard freestyle at a time of 1:50.78. In the relay was freshman Lauren Melendez-Rivero (El Paso, Texas), sophomore Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.), senior Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.), and junior Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.)

Freshman Meritxell Font Cantarero (Girona, Spain), freshman Julianna Engesser (South Elgin, Ill.), freshman Francesca Gastrow (Hartland, Wis.), and freshman Michaela Nelson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) took the 400-yard freestyle relay with a final time of 3:38.49.

  TOUCHING ONE, TWO

Freshman Maria Arakelian (Livonia, Mich.) took the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.12. Following Arakelian was teammate senior Nicola Pasquire (Bedford, England) who took second with 10:46.75.

Swimming in the 200-yard freestyle was Gastrow who touched the wall first at 1:58.28 with sophomore Emma Love (Louisville, Ky.) following at 2:02.27.

Font Cantarero won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.46 while sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy) snagged second at 2:22.88. 

Vaitkus won the 50-yard freestyle for the Wildcats, touching the wall at 25.23, and Irelan took second at 25.44. 

In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Jenna Joerger (Eagan, Minn.) took the race at 2:10.58 followed by junior Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia) who finished at 2:17.42.

  INDIVIDUAL WIN

Spajic took the 400-yard individual medley, touching the wall at 4:40.59 for the Wildcats.

  TAKE TWO

Nelson claimed the 200-yard individual medley touching the wall at 2:10.94. Nelson also took first in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:13.46.

  ARNOLD TOUCHES FIRST

Swimming in the 100-yard backstroke, Arnold took the race with a time of 1:01.05 while Engesser touched second at 1:01.45. Arnold also took the 100-yard butterfly, finishing at 1:00.09.

  WILDCATS TAKE THREE....X3

In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Wildcats claimed first, second, and third place. Junior Cassandra Clark (Newport News) touched first at 2:33.19, followed by sophomore Lucy Londergon (Minooka, Ill.) at 2:34.26, and Gastrow wrapped it up by touching at 2:37.79. 

The Wildcats captured the 100-yard freestyle with Vaitkus taking first at 54.47, followed by Springhetti at 55.40 and Arakelian took third with a time of 55.60. 

Finally, the Wildcats took the 100-yard breaststroke was, Clark touched first with a time of 1:09.85 followed by Joerger at 1:10.66, sophomore Riyah Rudeen (Rothschild, Wis.) touched third at 1:13.94.

  DIVERS SUCCESS

Over at the diving well NMU took the 3 meter dive, sophomore Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) placed first with 301.45 points and senior Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.) placed second with 265.95. Both women's scores earned them an NCAA "B" cut.

The Wildcats are traveling to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the Calvin College Invitational on Thursday, December 5 beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing throughout the weekend.
