MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team will look to continue its undefeated run in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference action as the Wildcats travel to Ashland for a matchup at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 9) and to Lake Erie College for a 1 p.m. tip Saturday (Jan. 11).
NMU has won its last six straight and is 9-1 overall with a 6-0 mark in conference play. The Wildcats are tied for first with Wayne State University in the GLIAC North Division. Last week, NMU defeated Tiffin (Jan. 2), 79-55 and Ohio Dominican (Jan. 4), 61-59.
Junior guard Alyssa Colla leads NMU averaging 15.3 points per game followed by juniors Abbey DeBruin (9.7), Lauren Gruber (9.4) and sophomore Anna Liewen (9.2). DeBruin is fifth in the GLIAC on field goal percentage, shooting 58.1 percent. In six games played, Liewen pulled down an average of 6.2 rebounds to lead NMU. Sophomore forward Nea Makela averages 5.1 rebounds in 10 games.
Ashland (6-4, 4-2 GLIAC) enters the week after splitting its two road games last weekend. Northwood University handed the Eagles their third straight loss (65-49) Thursday before Ashland beat Lake Superior State, 60-57 Saturday.
The Eagles are led by Taylor Woods, who is third in the GLIAC, averaging 18.3 points a game. Suzy Wollenhaupt (17.4), Alyssa Miller (15.5) and McKenzie Miller (11.2) also average in the double-figure scoring. Wollenhaupt leads the team in rebounding with 7.9 per game while Melanie Poorman averages 6.0.
The Wildcats hold the 16-10 advantage over Ashland in the all-time series. Last season NMU went 0-2 against the Eagles, dropping a 63-46 decision at home in regular-season play and losing in the GLIAC quarterfinals 68-35 at Ashland.
Lake Erie (6-6, 1-5 GLIAC) also split action last weekend losing at LSSU (49-37) Thursday and snapping a six-game losing streak beating Northwood, 61-59 Saturday.
The Storm's Jackie Murray is averaging 9.5 per game, while Chloe Irish has a 7.9 per game pace. Keading Skelton averages 6.3 rebounds per game to lead Lake Erie.
NMU is 3-0 in the all-time series against Lake Erie. The Wildcats won last season in Marquette, 68-65. In that game, Makela led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Gruber added 12 points and Colla had nine.
