MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Freshman Lexi Smith (St. Germain, Wis./Northland Pines) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year and earned All-GLIAC Second Team.
The freshman led the Wildcats in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game and grabbed an average of 4.5 rebounds per outing. Scoring double figures 19 times, and over 20 points three times, Smith posted a career-high of 29 points against Grand Valley State University.
Smith finished third on theteam by shooting 46 percent from the field and 81% from the free throw line, shooting 85-104 from the charity stripe this season. She set a new school record for most consecutive free throws in a game by going 15-15 against Saginaw Valley State University and also posted an 11-11 performance against Davenport University.
During her rookie campaign, Smith averaged 4.5 rebounds per game, grabbing a career-high of nine against Saginaw Valley State University. She also tied for the team's lead with 52 assists and notched 17 steals.
Smith is the first GLIAC Freshman of the Year for the Northern Michigan University Women's Basketball team since the 1994-95 season when Kris Manske won the award. As a team, the Wildcats made their seventh-straight appearance in the GLIAC Championship and posted their fourth winning season in the past five years.
