MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Lacrosse started the 2019 season on a high note as they defeated Albion College 17-8 in their season opener.
| STAT LEADERS
The Wildcats saw five players score goals, with junior Graison Ringlever (Mattawan, Mich.) and freshman Aleya Speas (Castle Rock, Colo.) leading the way with five goals each. Freshman Jessica Daniels (Brighton, Mich.) added four.
Ringlever notched eight draw controls and Daniels and Renfrew both collected two each. Sophomore Shannon Walus (Brighton, Mich.) finished with four ground balls. Kostelec, Daniels and Ringlever both tallied three. Speas and Renfrew posted two caused turnovers.
In goal, freshman Cam Stilson (Brighton, Mich.) notched 15 saves in her NMU debut.
| THE FIRST HALF
Speas got things started by scoring the first goal of the game less than two minutes in, getting a pass from Kostelec. Daniels then added a second goal on a free position shot to give NMU a 2-0 lead.
The Britons answered with two goals before Daniels scored on two consecutive free position shots. Ringlever followed with her first of the day to give NMU a 5-2 advantage with 12:25 on the clock.
With 7:39 on the clock, Kostelec found Renfrew for a goal. Renfrew then found Speas less than a minute later and made the score 7-2.
30 seconds later, Speas scored again, this time from Kostelec. Albion managed to score with 1:37 left in the half and the teams went into halftime with NMU leading 9-3.
| THE SECOND HALF
After the Britons started the second half with a goal, Kostelec found the net then Ringlever followed another Albion goal to make the score 11-5 six minutes into the half.
Speas and Ringlever then added free position shots before the guests scored again to make the score 13-6 halfway through the half.
At the 11:56 mark, Ringlever scored on another free position shot, then Kostelec found Speas again less than a minute later and made the NMU lead 15-6.
After another Albion score, Kostelec and Daniels both scored unassisted and moved the score up to a 17-7 lead. Albion scored again with 10 seconds to go but it wouldn't be enough as NMU captured the 17-8 victory.

The Wildcats start the year 1-0 after the victory while Albion falls to 1-1. NMU returns to action Sunday, March 3 to take on #4 Lindenwood University at 1 p.m. in the Superior Dome.
