Timberwolves Get Revenge Over WIldcats

MIDLAND, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer (2-6-1, 1-1-1 GLIAC) dominated the ball offensively, but fell, 1-0, to Northwood University (3-6, 1-2 GLIAC) Friday evening on the road.

Despite managing to outshoot the Timberwolves in the opening half, 8-6, NMU found themselves in a 1-0 deficit at the intermission after allowing a goal in the 32nd-minute of play off a corner kick. It was the final shot NU would take in the half, while the Wildcats recorded five in the final seven minutes of the half.

NMU took nine shot attempts between the 49th-minute and the 82nd-minute, while holding the Timberwolves without a shot attempt during the same span. Four of those nine Wildcat shot attempts were on-goal, while two came within inches of finding the back of the next.

A shot by junior defender Raven Mitchell (Davison, Michigan) rebounded off of the crossbar to freshman defender Kaitlynn Benson (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) Benson's shot then also connected with the crossbar allowing NU to maintain their 1-0 advantage.

NMU was unable to record a shot in the final eight minutes of action, falling to the Timberwolves in regulation. The loss snapped the squad's three-match undefeated streak. That streak started two weeks ago when the Wildcats picked up their first win of 2017 over Northwood.

Offensively, junior defender Anna Worman (Racine, Wisconsin) and senior midfielder Abby Cook (DeWitt, Michigan) lead the Wildcats with four shots each. Worman also recorded two shots on-goal. Senior defender Allyssa Milam (Williamston, Michigan), junior midfielder Maddie Herbert (Clarkston, Michigan) and Mitchell all had two shots on the day.

In goal, freshman goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wisconsin) recorded a pair of saves, facing three Northwood shots on goal. d

The Wildcats travel to Saginaw, Michigan Sunday afternoon for a matchup with Saginaw Valley State University (5-4, 1-2 GLIAC). The Cardinals defeated NMU two weeks ago in Marquette, Michigan and are coming off a 1-0 victory Friday over Michigan Technological University. The start time between NMU-SVU is scheduled for noon.
