Wildcats Drop GLIAC Contest to Davenport

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer team hosted Davenport University in a matchup of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes but a late goal from the Panthers proved the difference as NMU fell to DU 3-2.

Down 1-0 in the second half, the Wildcats took advantage of a corner kick to tie the score in the 59th minute.

Taking the corner from the left side, sophomore Caroline Halonen (Hartland, Mich.) booted the ball into the box. Senior Gaelin Hirabayashi (Ijamsville, Md.) was able to rise above the defense and head the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.

After Davenport was able to take a lead, senior Jamie Montgomery (Gaithersburg, Md.) tied the game back at 2-2 by knocking in a penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season.

However, the Panthers were able to score one more goal with 11 minutes to play which proved the difference, giving DU a 3-2 victory.

Halonen led the squad with four shots and an assist. Hirabayashi and Montgomery both added a shot and a goal. Junior Isabela Cardosa (Hialeah, Fla.), sophomore Rachael Erste (Rockford, Mich.) and freshman Isabelle Brusilow (Grosse Point, Mich.) each posted a shot as well.

In goal, junior Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wis.) made five saves.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday for a 3 p.m. start for GLIAC action with Saginaw Valley State University on the NMU Soccer Field.
