Johnson Earns All-American Status in Discus at NCAA Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan track and field team had a pair of discus throwers compete at the NCAA Championships in sophomores Samanthia Johnson and Jasmine Williams.

Williams opened the event with a throw of 41.81 meters, which proved to be her best throw of the day.  She followed that up with throws of 40.89 meters and 39.17 meters to put her in 17th place for the competition.

Johnson started in fourth place after a throw of 46.68 meters.  Her next three throws put her in ninth place before she had her best toss of the day at 48.51 meters placing her in eighth.  Johnson was then able to hold onto her eight place finish after the final toss earning her All-American accolades.

The 48.51 meter throw from Johnson was also a personal best along with an NMU shcool record.

"Our throwers did very well today representing NMU at the NCAA Championships," commented head coach Jen Ryan.  "Samanthia had a great day against a very strong field of throwers finishing as an All-American.  Assistant coach Luke Pease has done an excellent job all season coaching, mentoring and guiding these student-athletes.  I am proud of all of them and very excited for the future of our track and field program."
