HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The volleyball team for Northern Michigan University closed out the Keweenaw Classic hosted by Michigan Technical University with a 3-0 sweep over Bemidji State University.
NMU never let the Beavers get close, winning the match 25-16, 25-9 and 25-15.
The Wildcats dominated at the net, finishing with 34 kills and 25 total blocks. Senior Kayla Chose (Wrightstown, Wisc.) tallied 11 kills and six total blocks while senior Madison Whitehead (Altoona, Wisc.) finished with 10 kills and seven total blocks to lead the team.
Freshman Leticia Antunes (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Ofelia Fonseca) chipped in with eight kills. Junior Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) posted five aces to aid the offensive attack, with junior Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley/Cape Fear CC) chipping in with three aces.
Sophomore Gabriella Martinez (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista/Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras) and sophomore Cheyanna Pyka (Merrill, Wisc.) both finished with an ace.
Senior Jamie Hogeboom (Grand Haven, Mich.) posted 24 assists.
Defensively, Braunsweig finished with seven digs and Monsma added five. Freshman Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wisc./De Pere) helped to protect the net as she closed out the match with four total blocks.
With the victory, NMU finishes the Keweenaw Classic at 3-1 and move to 6-2 on the season. The Keweenaw Classic All-Tournament Team will be announced later tonight. The Wildcats will return to action Friday as they open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with their first home match, hosting Saginaw Valley State University.
