SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Northern Michigan University Volleyball used two double-doubles to begin their 2018 campaign with a 3-1 victory over McKendree University at the Capital Classic hosted by University of Illinois-Springfield.
Senior Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 12 digs. She also added three solo blocks.
Sophomore Leticia Antunes (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Ofelia Fonseca) added 16 kills and 13 digs to also record her first double-double this year.
Defensively, senior Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley) led the way with 17 digs.
Freshman Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) finished with two aces in her collegiate debut. Senior Jessica Skonning (LaGrange, Ill. / Lyons Township), junior Cheyanna Pyke (Merrill, Wis.) and Monsma each added an ace as well.
NMU jumped out early and cruised to a 25-15 first set victory. The Bearcats bounced back but the Wildcats held on for a 25-22 score to win the second set.
In the third set NMU quickly took an 11-4 lead, but McKendree rebounded and pulled the set to 15-12 and forced an NMU timeout. NMU jumped back ahead, 20-15 but the Bearcats clawed back and eventually captured a 33-31 third set victory.
The fourth set saw the teams battle to a 20-20 tie score, but NMU pulled ahead and claimed the 25-21 victory.
The Wildcats will return this evening to take on Walsh University at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
