MARQUETTE, Mich. — Northern Michigan head coach Jenny Ryan announced the cross country team's 2017 schedule Thursday afternoon.
"We're looking forward to another great year of cross country," Ryan said. "We've qualified for the NCAA Championships the past two seasons, and we have a strong team coming back with some talented new additions. Our schedule is set up to help us reach our goal of making it three in a row."
After racing at meets hosted by Michigan Tech (Sept. 1), Lake Superior State (Sept. 9) and Michigan State (Sept. 16), Northern Michigan takes part in the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational (Sept. 23). The Wildcats will attempt to finish in the top three for the fourth-straight year.
Northern Michigan then competes at the Bay College Invitational (Sept. 30) and the Conference Crossover Invitational (Oct. 7).
A highlight of the schedule is the GLIAC Championships (Oct. 21), which will be held at the NMU Golf Course in Harvey, Mich.
"It will be great to host the GLIAC Championships for the first time since 2005," Ryan said. "It'll be exciting to have the support of our home crowd and alumni at one of our biggest meets of the year."
The Wildcats then race at the NCAA Midwestern Regional (Nov. 4) for a chance to compete at the NCAA National Championships (Nov. 18). The national championship meet will be held in Evansville, Ind., the site of the past three NCAA midwestern regional events.
In 2016, Northern Michigan took 14th at the NCAA National Championships, bolstered by Kameron Burmeister's All-American finish. The Wildcats also took second at the GLIAC Championships, their highest finish since 2005.
