KENOSHA, Wisc.—The No. 13 Northern Michigan University women's cross country team was the top-finishing NCAA Division II team with the second-best finish overall Saturday morning at the Wisconsin-Parkside Godfrey Cross Country Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Two runners in the top-10 pushed the Wildcats past a number of NCAA I schools include the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, DePaul University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. NCAA I member Marquette University was the top overall finisher.
Senior Kameron Burmeister (Menominee, Michigan) paced the wildcats with a fourth-place finish in the field of 163 runners. Her time of 17 minutes, 55.70 seconds was just eight seconds shy of the top spot. Sophomore Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Michigan) was able to grab a top-10 finish in the first meet of the season, placing 10th with a time of 18:27.
Rounding out the top-five finishers for NMU were senior Kieren Becker (Fowler, Michigan) in 13 with a time of 18:42.2, junior Abby Fifarek (Buckley, Michigan) in 16th with a time of 18:48.2, and sophomore Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minnesota) who placed 54th in 19:46.8.
Next up for the Wildcats will be the Spartan Invite to be held Saturday, September 16 in East Lansing Michigan. A year ago, NMU placed seventh out of 12 NCAA II teams to compete in the field which totaled over 350 runners.
