Wildcats Take Top Two Places at U.P. Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Cross Country hosted their the U.P. Championships Friday afternoon at the NMU Golf Course. The Wildcats placed second as a team and took the top-two individual places in the five-kilometer race.


The top finisher in the race was senior Nicole Schneider (Plymouth, Minnesota) who crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 56.60 seconds to take the individual crown. It was Schneider's first cross country competition since the 2016 U.P. Championships.

Not far behind was junior Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minnesota) who was the next runner to cross the finish line. Torvi finished with a time of 18:58.80, more than a half-a-second in front of the next fastest runner.


The next three Wildcat runners were all freshman, led by Abigail Jarzin (Green Bay, Wisconsin). She was the sixth-fastest runner in the field, finishing with a time of 19:22.80. Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and Katrina Salmen (Peshtigo, Wisconsin) were the next two Wildcats to finish the race in 12th and 14th, respectively. Kelly finished with a time of 19:41.50, while Salmen recorded a time of 20:06.70.


Rounding out the top-seven runners were senior Shayla Manitowabi-Huebner (Marquette, Michigan) and freshman Aubrey Friedrich (Lockport, Illinois). With a time of 20:14.90, Manitoabi-Huebner placed 15th, while Friedrich finished right behind her with a time of 20:20.60.

The Wildcats will now prepare for the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships set for November 3. The meet will be hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. Last season, NMU earned a second-place finish with five runners earning All-Conference honors.
