Cross Country Heads to Minnesota for Roy Griak Invitational

MARQUETTE, Mich. –  The Northern Michigan University Cross Country team heads to Minnesota for the annual Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The Wildcats come into the weekend ranked #19 in the country in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. NMU received 60 points in the latest poll, and are just four points away from #18, but are 22 points ahead of the team behind them. Northern Michigan is one of three teams from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference who is nationally ranked.


The Wildcats started the season at the Northwood Invitational and tied for first based on points, but finished second after the tie breaker to Saginaw Valley State University.  In their next race, the Spartan Invitational, the team finished sixth out of 26 teams and second among all Division II teams in the race.


Leading the Wildcats in their two races this season has been senior Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Mich.). Smith finished second at the Northwood Invitational 5K, 18:22.9, then followed it with a time of 22:31.8 for 22nd place at the Spartan Invitational 6K.

Freshman Madison Malon (Grandville, Mich.) has been second, placing fourth at Northwood, 22:44.3, and 32nd at the Spartan, coming in at 22:44.3.

Junior Ellise Longley (Bloomington, Minn.) was sixth at Northwood, clocking in at 18:49.0, while coming in at 59th, 23:24.9, at the Spartan.



Senior Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minn.) and sophomore Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minn.) have also aided the team's efforts this year. Torvi, in 19:04.5, finished eighth at Northwood and followed it by taking 81st at the Spartan Invite, 23:50.1. Kelly was 13th at Northwood, posting a time of 19:24.7, and finished 92nd at the Spartan by crossing at 24:07.8. 


In last year's event, the Wildcats finished fifth in a field of 22 teams. Smith led this season's returns by finished 34th in last year's race, timing in at 23:32.80. Torvi finished fourth among the Wildcats as her time of 24:09.20 was good enough for 54th. Senior Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wis.) was right behind, taking 55th place in 24:09.50.
