Cross Country Heads to GLIAC Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Cross Country heads to Westville, Indiana for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Purdue University Northwest. The 6K race is slated to begin at Noon Eastern, 11 a.m Central.



The meet will feature live results at The course is located at on the PNW-Westville Campus, behind the Dworkin Student Services and Activities Center (DSAC) with the start and finish in close proximity to one another. The women's championship 6k race consists of a straightaway start/finish and 3 full loops. The men's 8k championship race consists of the same straightaway start/finish and 4 full loops.


The Wildcats hosted the U.P. Championships and defeated Michigan Technological University and Bay College, taking the top six spots of the race, and placed a total of seven runners in the top ten.



Sophomore Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minn.) captured first place by completing the course in 19:27.7. Freshman Meghan Langworthy (Big Rapids, Mich.) took second place with a time of 19:33.1.

Freshmen Kimberly Carviou  (Marinette, Wis.) and Caroline Vegeberg (Fejo, Denmark) were the next two finishers. Carviou crossed the finish line in 19:41.5 for third while Vegeverg was close behind in 19:43.1 to take fourth.

Sophomore Katrina Salmen(Peshtigo, Wis.) took fifth place with a completed time of 19:43.8. Crossing in sixth place was freshman Morgan Lyon (Traverse City, Mich.) with a time of 19:56.1.

Freshman Emily Sterling (Boyne City, Mich.) also finished among the meet's top ten, posting a time of 10:11.3 for 10th.


Several of the team's top runners did not compete in the U.P. Championships and last appeared at the Conference Crossover, the largest Division II-only meet of the year. Freshman Madison Malon (Grandville, Mich.) led the Wildcats at the Conference Crossover by running the course in 23:39.6 on a rainy and windy day. Her time had her finish in 42nd place. Senior Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Mich.) was second for NMU, finishing in 64th with a time of 24:44.9.


In addition to Malon and Smith, others have contributed points at each meet this year.  Senior Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minn.) has continually given NMU points this season, and ran 24:09.3 this past weekend. Sophomore Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minn.) also aides the effort, and finished the Conference Crossover in 25:12.3. 

Two others aided the effort at the Conference Crossover, freshman Paige Saiz (Milford, Mich.) and senior Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wis.). Saiz was the fourth Wildcat to finish the course, 24:44.9, while the time of 24:53.8 helped Du Bois finish as the fifth NMU runner to cross the finish line. The pair also scored points at the Roy Griak Invite and the Northwood Invitational.


The Wildcats finished fifth last year and had one earn All-GLIAC honors at the meet. This year', the GLIAC features three teams in the top 25 but NMU has two of them during the season. The Wildcats just recently defeated Tech last week and also defeated the Huskies and Saginaw Valley State University at the Michigan State University's Spartan Invitational.
