Wildcat Runners Set for NCAA Regionals Saturday

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Cross Country heads to the NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday in Evansville, Indiana, hosted by the University of Southern Indiana.

The race is slated to start at 11:30 a.m. Eastern and will take place at Angel Mounds.

The Wildcats competed in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Championships two weeks ago and saw three individuals finish inside the top 20 while the team took a fifth place finish. 


NMU saw three earn Second Team All-GLIAC honors. Senior Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Mich.) finished 12th in a time of 22:09.5. Senior Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minn.) was 19th by crossing the finish line in 22:25.7. Rounding out the postseason recognition was freshman Madison Malon (Grandville, Mich.) was 20th at 22:28.8.


Two runners posted a personal best at the GLIAC Championships by reducing their time by overa minute.  Freshman Paige Saiz (Milford, Mich.) posted a time of 23:09.4 which was over a minute faster than her previous best time. Freshman Kimberly Carviou (Marinette, Wis.) also bested her time by over a minute as her 23:42.4 was 1:13 faster.

Torvi also largely improved her time as she took off nearly 1:25 off her time.


At the Championships, seven others also competed consisting of six freshman and sophomores. Sophomore Aubrey Friedrich (Lockport, Ill.), Sophomore Katrina Salmen (Peshtigo, Wis.) and Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minn.), and freshman Meghan Langworthy (Big Rapids, Mich.), Emily Sterling (Boyne City, Mich.) and Morgan Lyon (Traverse City, Mich.) have each competed in numerous meets this year.

Senior Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wis.) has also competed in every meet this year and provided leadership at each meet.


Last year's Regionals were hosted by Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. The Wildcats finished in 11th place out of 29 teams and saw Torvi finish in 51st place as the top returner from last year with a time of 23:22.50. Du Bois also competed in last year's Regionals and posted a time of 24:51.60.
